OPPO returns with another proposal from a strong mid-range. This time it's Reno 5 5G. Considering that for now the top models of this brand are not intended for the Polish market (unfortunately), this is the latest and best smartphone of this manufacturer in our country. This time we get 5G in the set, a lot of improvements in the system overlay and the camera application, as well as unique, even among the top flagships, 65W charging. Remembering that the smartphone costs PLN 1999, we proceed to get acquainted with OPPO Reno 5 5G in more detail.

Main pros and cons of OPPO Reno 5 5G 5G

Advantages of OPPO Reno 5 5G:

Disadvantages of OPPO Reno 5 5G:

How do we rate the design? - 4 rating

OPPO Reno 5 5G is distinguished by a matte back cover. This treatment allowed to completely eliminate touch marks and smudges. In addition, the matte surface refracts light, shimmers and changes shade. This is one of the most practical types of smartphone housing finish. The latest OPPO Reno 5 5G is made entirely of plastic. I can accept plastic backs, because they have their specific advantages in the form of lower weight and greater resistance to falls. However, I would definitely expect a frame made of metal, and this one is also plastic. However, I have no complaints about the design.

Phone dimensions are 159.1 x 73.4 x 7.9mm. Reno 5 5G weighs only 172 g. By today's standards, we are dealing with a light and small device. However, there is no official standard for housing sealing.

The phone can be unlocked with both the face and the fingerprint reader hidden under the screen. Both methods are fast and effective, which significantly translates into friendly and trouble-free use of the device.

OPPO Reno 5 5G has a single speaker on the bottom edge that offers very good volume. It also offers a headphone jack and space for two SIM cards, but without the possibility of expanding the memory with a micro SD card.

What do we think about the display? - 5+ rating

The OPPO Reno 5 5G screen has a diagonal of 6.4 inches and a resolution of FHD+ 2400 x 1080 pixels. The panel is made in AMOLED technology and offers a refresh rate of 90 Hz. The OPPO Reno 5 5G screen is certified by Netflix HD and Amazon Prime Video HD.

The screen is worthy of many flagships. It offers great contrast, very good brightness, saturated colors and offers smoother animations due to its higher refresh rate. It also has narrow frames, symmetrical on three sides with a slightly wider "chin" and a small round cutout for the front camera. What the most expensive devices offer differs in nuances that can only be noticed when comparing devices directly side by side.

The screen settings include a dark mode, eye comfort with blue light reduction and optional black and white display, color temperature adjustment and an image quality improvement option called AXES. In the "more" tab, we will find two important options hidden - the refresh rate and the color mode - vivid or delicate.

Specs & OS - 4 rating

OPPO Reno 5 5G is powered by Snapdragon 765G octa-core processor clocked at 1 x 2.4GHz + 1 x 2.2GHz + 6 x 1.8GHz , supported by 8 GB RAM and 128 GB for the system and user files. Unfortunately, it is not possible to expand the memory with a micro SD card. Therefore, it is worth considering whether 128 GB is enough for us.

Benchmarks came out as follows:

The performance of OPPO Reno 5 5G is enough to enjoy using the phone. The system runs pleasantly smooth, which is enhanced by the 90 Hz refresh rate. There are also no problems with launching the application. Performance from benchmarks is about half the performance of flagships with the Snapdragon 888 processor, but the price is half of the flagships. On the other hand, OPPO Reno 4 Pro had exactly the same processor and in this regard, switching to a newer model does not bring anything new. It's just a safe spec for a more powerful mid-range.

The connectivity package includes LTE, 5G, WiFi ac, Bluetooth 5.1 and NFC. Location is implemented using GPS, BeiDou, GLONASS, Galileo and QZSS standards.

The sensor suite includes: geomagnetic sensor, optical proximity sensor, ambient light sensor, accelerometer, gravity sensor, gyroscope and electronic compass.

The phone runs on the latest Android 11 system, which at the time of the test has updated security as of February 5, 2021. The system overlay is ColorOS version 11.1.

Among the additional system functions added in the overlay, we find FlexDrop, which allows you to run applications in a pop-up window and mini-window, translate text in screenshots using a shortcut in the sidebar, or a three-finger gesture. There is also the Game Space, which optimizes performance, allows you to manage notifications as well as adjust the touch sensitivity of the screen. It is also possible to personalize the dark mode and the Always-On Display.

The system works smoothly and without any problems - during the tests I did not encounter any problems.

What kind of photos and videos does he take? - 4+ rating

OPPO Reno 5 5G has 4 cameras on the back and one on the front, but only 4 of them allow you to preview the frame, and 3 are useful in practice:

In the camera application you will find the following modes: photo, video, ultra night, portrait, video from two cameras, slow motion, time-lapse, movie, expert, extra HD, panorama, text scanner, macro, sticker.

Note the movie mode, which allows you to manually control all settings in video mode, which is not often seen. The manufacturer himself puts great emphasis on the two-camera mode, which allows you to record the image of the person holding the phone and what he sees in front of him in three possible layouts. The macro mode, with a resolution of 2 megapixels, is invariably, in my opinion, added more for marketing purposes.

What OPPO has done is night photography. They have saturated colors, a good balance between bright highlights and deep shadows, they are noiseless, clean and legible. Interestingly, the night mode also works for selfie photos and the effects are also very good. Such good night photos are rare, especially in the middle price range. OPPO also offers many AI-based scene improvements.

Daytime shots are sharp and detailed, and the wide-angle camera doesn't disappoint either. However, there is no optical magnification and the x2 and x5 magnifications offered are implemented only digitally, which clearly affects the quality.

OPPO Reno 5 5G allows you to record video in 4K, but only from the main camera. Switching to the wide-angle camera switches the resolution to 1080p. OPPO also offers advanced and effective digital stabilization when recording video, but it also limits the resolution to 1080p. So you have to remember that by choosing 4K, you deprive yourself of most of the useful video functions. The recording quality itself is impeccable and, together with the manual mode, allows for great flexibility and control, which will also be appreciated by more advanced and demanding users.

How long does the battery last? – 5+ rating

OPPO Reno 5 5G has a 4300 mAh battery, which is satisfactory, although there are many phones with 5000 mAh batteries on the market.

When testing YouTube video playback with the screen brightness set to half, the battery was 50% discharged after 12 hours. This means that the Reno 5 allows for close to 24 hours of video streaming. This is a very good result.

The most impressive, however, is SuperVOOC 2.0 charging with a power of up to 65W. I happened to notice that I have 30% of the battery and recharge it to 60% in literally a moment. The manufacturer assures that only 35 minutes is enough for a full charge. However, when trying to measure the charging time from scratch, my result was much longer, over an hour. I don't know what could have influenced it and before the final verdict I would like to repeat the test and update the review with this parameter.

After attempting to charge a completely discharged phone with it turned off (middle column), I started the next charge with the phone turned on with one percent of battery left. As you can see from the results, in this scenario the phone was charged three times faster and close to the values declared by the manufacturer. It seems that the phone must be turned on to use the full potential of SuperVOOC 2.0 with a power of 65W. Then it is the fastest charging I have had the opportunity to test.

Our final opinion

OPPO Reno 5 5G is an interesting proposition for more demanding customers looking for a device that does not cost a million coins. The most noteworthy is the great AMOLED screen with 90 Hz refresh rate and 65W charging. I like the matte finish of the housing, night photos and the ability to control the recorded video. The performance of the device is sufficient, although it is difficult to define it as something special in this price range. I appreciate 5G and the refined system overlay. Of the minuses, the housing is made entirely of plastic, which is rare in this price range. There is also no sealing of the housing and the telephoto lens, and the macro lens is added forcibly. I had a very pleasant and trouble-free experience with OPPO Reno 5 5G.

We love: 65W charging

We don't like: All-plastic housing
