How to record screen on iPhone 12 or iPhone SE 2020

Screen recording is a native iOS feature that has been with iPhone and iPad users for several years. However, with the new models of iDevices, the screen recording procedure changes a bit. The instructions below describe how to record the screen with or without audio on an iPhone 12 or iPhone SE 2020.

Thanks to the screen recording option built into the iOS system, you can create videos showing what is happening on the screen of your iPhone or iPad. Videos can contain audio from an application (useful for recording games, for example), or audio from an iPhone's microphone (useful when recording various tutorials). In addition, some third-party iOS apps support screen sharing, a feature that can be used to broadcast what is happening on the screen directly to the app.

Limitations of iOS screen recording

Not everything displayed on the iPhone screen can be recorded. Due to copyright protection and anti-piracy protection, you cannot record from streaming applications such as Netflix, HBO and the like. Likewise, audio recording may not be available for some music or game streaming applications.

IOS cannot change the parameters of the recorded video. Resolution, movie quality or number of frames per second are fixed parameters. Of course, after recording, the video can be freely edited or trimmed, even in the system's Photos application.

Step 1 - add the record button to the control center

Screen recording can be started with a button in the control center. However, the screen record button is not the default item in Control Center. Therefore, to be able to record screen, you must first manually add the record button to the control center. This is a one-time operation and does not need to be performed each time before recording the screen.

How do I add a screen record button to the control center?

To add a screen record button to the iOS control center, launch the Settings app, then select Control Center. Then scroll down to the More Tools section. In the list of tools, find the screen record button, and press the green + button on the left side of it. The screen recording button will appear in the Displayed Tools list, which means it has been added to the Control Center.

Remember: you can rearrange the buttons in the Control Center. To do this, go to the Displayed tools list, and then drag the selected element to the desired place using the icon with dashes. And to remove the screen record button from the control center, swipe left on it and click Delete.

For the duration of screen recording, depending on the iPhone model, the top bar will turn red or a red recording icon will appear in place of the clock.
