Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ test

S-class smartphone ("Mercedes" scale A, B, C, E, S)

Rating scale 1-6 (6-excellent)

Note to always a line of the most advanced Samsung smartphones, dedicated to the most demanding users. Currently the specification of this series is more and more similar to the Galaxy S series. Despite the great similarities to the S10, these "notebooks" still stand out with a stylus. Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ is one of the best, if not the best smartphone on the market. Unfortunately, it is also one of the most expensive. Those who can afford such an expense will certainly not be disappointed. Let's check how this super smartphone works in practice.

Pros:

Cons:

Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ is made of a metal frame and Gorilla Glass 6, both on the front and back. Both panes of glass are strongly rounded at the edges, which made the metal frame narrower and more comfortable to hold the phone in your hand.

For the first time in the Note series, Samsung gave up the headphone jack and changed the layout of the physical keys. Both the volume rocker and power button are now on the left edge, while the right edge is smooth. For some users this will be a problem, for others the change will be irrelevant. I got used to it, although placing the volume control on one edge and the power button on the other seemed more intuitive and convenient. The dedicated Bixby physical button is also gone. Now you can configure the power button to operate it. To turn on the phone, you need to hold down the volume down button and the power button at the same time. You can also assign any application to double-press the power button, but there is no option to configure the Google assistant.

Note can be unlocked with a fingerprint using the reader built into the screen or using the face. Both methods are quick and effective, but the fingerprint is a safer option - face scanning is done using the front camera itself, without depth or iris scanning. This is the price you have to pay for the lack of a large screen cutout. The reader itself is fast and reliable.

The Note 10+ has stereo speakers, and they are, in my opinion, the best-sounding, loudest speakers of this type among devices without wide bezels. They sound great even at maximum volume, individual channels are clearly distinguishable and reproduced through the right speakers - without channel mixing. The speakers are perfect for hands-free calls, listening to broadcasts and watching movies.

The Note 10+ case measures 162.3 x 77.2 x 7.9mm with a weight of 196 grams. The construction is sealed according to the IP68 standard, including the stylus hidden in the housing. Thanks to the rounded edges, the smartphone fits well in the hand, but full one-handed operation is quite difficult and requires a lot of gymnastics.

Samsung is known for great screens and the Note 10+ is a perfect example. The display has a diagonal of 6.8 inches and a resolution of WQHD + 3040 x 1440 pixels. The screen panel was made in Dynamic AMOLED technology. The screen aspect ratio is 19:9 and the pixel density is 498 PPI. Note 10+ also has extremely narrow screen frames, thanks to which the screen filling exceeds 90% - a better result than in smartphones without any cutouts. In Note 10+ we find a round hole for the front camera, but it is smaller than the Galaxy S series and it is located centrally.

Simply put, this is probably the best screen available on a smartphone - extremely bright, readable even in the strongest sun, high contrast, with saturated colors and super sharp. Compared to the competition, the super bright and edge-to-edge screen are the most noticeable.

In the settings you will find a blue light filter, a night mode that darkens the entire interface, as well as adjusting the color profile and white balance. As it is an AMOLED screen, the Always On function is available, replacing the notification LED.

The only part of the screen's specification that isn't fully competitive is the standard 60Hz refresh rate. Some smartphones, such as the OnePlus 7 Pro, offer a refresh rate of 90 Hz or 120 Hz as in the Razer Phone, which noticeably improves the smoothness of all animations. This is not a key feature, but it would certainly be welcome with such a high price of the device.

A side effect of narrow bezels is occasional unwanted touch at the edge. By reaching your thumb to some letters on the opposite side of the screen while typing, you can inadvertently enter additional letters and interrupt, for example, swiping typing. It didn't happen often enough to be annoying though. This is probably partly dependent on the size of your hand and how you grip the phone.

The Note brand has always stood for the best specification available. In this case, in Europe this means the Exynos 9825 processor clocked at 2 x 2.73 GHz + 2 x 2.4 GHz + 4 x 1.9 GHz. The processor is supported by a monstrous RAM size - up to 12 GB, also in the case of less available memory capacity for the system and files, i.e. 256 GB, as well as in the 512 GB version. The memory can be expanded with a micro SD card up to 1 TB.

Benchmark results are as follows:

In the Antutu Note 10+ ranking, it ranks sixth, but the differences in the results of the first few places are small. It is worth noting that the Note 10+ achieved the highest memory read and write scores of all the smartphones we tested, and here the difference is much greater than in the case of processor performance.

The communication package includes LTE cat. 20 2048/150 Mbps, dual-band WiFi both ac and ax, Bluetooth 5.0 and NFC. Location is carried out using GPS, GLONASS, BDS and GALILEO standards.

The sensor set includes accelerometer, gyroscope, light sensor, proximity sensor, digital compass, barometer and fingerprint reader. The Samsung phone can work with sensors in the ANT+ standard. Samsung decided to get rid of the built-in heart rate monitor. I think that the main reason for this decision was the takeover of the heart rate measurement function by bands and smartwatches that can measure around the clock - not only when we put our finger on.

Summarizing the Note 10+ specification, it can be said that it is exactly what you would expect - uncompromising.

Note 10+ runs on Android 9 with One UI version 1.5. At the time of writing this review, the Android security patch level was August 1, 2019.

Samsung overlay works really nice. It has been optimized so that in some cases it seems faster and smoother than pure Android. This is probably due to the strategically placed animations and their duration. The impression itself, however, is very good and that's what counts above all.

Like other Samsung smartphones, the Device Care tab allows you to ensure trouble-free operation of your smartphone. It can clean memory, optimize battery usage and scan for security threats. My safe is a function based on Samsung Knox solutions and is used to encrypt sensitive data.

Advanced features include the ability to configure SOS messages, video quality enhancement during replay, dual messenger, Game Launcher, option to reduce the time of system animations and side button functions.

The first big novelty is the extensive Samsung DEX function. Not only does it not require a docking station to operate, but only a USB C cable with an HDMI adapter, but also allows you to run DEX mode inside a computer with Windows or OS X. Then from a computer, even on a laptop that does not have a separate monitor with a set enter, we have access to the DEX environment. This means running Android applications on a large screen, replying to SMS messages from a large keyboard, as well as the ability to freely drag files between the phone and the computer and vice versa. It is even possible to share the clipboard - we can copy something on the computer and paste it in the application on the phone. Not everyone will use these functions, but for advanced phone users it can be an absolute revelation.

The second novelty is the expansion of the functionality of the stylus, which is the main distinguishing feature of the Note in the smartphone market. Relative to Note 9, the operating time of the stylus has been extended from 200 clicks to 11 hours. This allows you to remotely take photos without having to pair the selfie stick via Bluetooth, or conduct presentations directly from your phone, changing presentation slides from a distance. This time the stylus also received an accelerometer that allows you to perform gestures in the air. We can adjust the media volume, switch images and view details about them. For each application, you can assign 8 gestures - single and double click, up and down, left and right gestures, and turn left and turn right. Samsung has made libraries available to developers who can create applications that use the stylus and its gestures.

Full text recognition from handwritten notes, including those made with the screen off, is also new. Thanks to this, they can be searched and the entered text can be copied to Word. Recognition works almost flawlessly even on careless and illegible handwriting. Also new is the ability to take notes on a video or screen recording, even with a commentary recorded by the microphone.

Note 10+ has been equipped with a set of cameras very similar to what we find in S10:

There are few hardware changes compared to the S10 and S10+. The main thing is a slightly brighter F/2.1 telephoto instead of F2/4 and the addition of a TOF camera that Samsung didn't have before. Note 9 also did not have a wide-angle camera, which was taken from the S10 without hardware changes - it still has a fixed focus. The selfie camera is a little darker - F/2.2 instead of F/1.9.

The list of camera modes includes:

A convenient option that is not available in many other smartphones is the ability to edit the order of modes, as well as hide those that we do not use.

The camera app also includes Scene Optimizer, Live View Filters, Optional Shot Tips, Motion Shots, and the ability to save photos as RAW and HEIF. In the video, the Microphone Zoom function and the ability to record HDR10 + video have been added. There is also an option to sketch in 3D after the face detected by the camera scanned with TOF.

On the one hand, Note 10+ does not have a camera function from the "best" category - it still will not take photos in almost complete darkness like the P30 Pro, nor does it offer x5 or even x3 telephoto zoom, and the wide-angle lens cannot focus and there is no super macro function. On the other hand, in the most common conditions, i.e. in normal photos during the day, the Note 10+ performs extremely well. It focuses instantly and flawlessly, the photos are detailed and attractive, and the camera app is polished and fun to use. My only and quite difficult to explain reservation is the manual mode, referred to as Pro, limited only to the main camera. However, the night mode is available for each of the three cameras and even for the selfie camera.

The selfie camera should also be praised, which not only offers excellent quality, but above all focuses, so you don't have to wonder if you're holding the camera at the optimal distance from your face. Photos always come out sharp. In terms of selfies, only smartphones with a rotating camera can compete with Samsung, which take ordinary photos and selfies with the same lens and matrix. Among smartphones with a dedicated selfie camera, there are no better than Samsung.

The video quality is also among the best. The phone is very good at focusing and changing the exposure. You can record in resolutions from HD 720p to 4K 2160p, also in 60 frames per second. There is also a screen-filling resolution of 2288 x 1080 pixels, and a square video of 1440 x 1440 pixels. The same resolutions are available from the front camera with a skip of 60 frames per second.

Stabilization is very effective and allows you to film while walking without any problems in all modes except 4K 60p - in the latter, stabilization also works and handheld recordings are flawless, but recording while walking in this mode will already bring noticeable image swinging.

Samsung also offers a special Super Steady video mode that only supports FHD resolution and crops the image tighter so that the digital stabilization can work more aggressively. In S10, this mode was limited only to the wide-angle lens, and in Note 10+ you can also switch to the standard camera - the telephoto lens is still not available and it is fully understandable, because the best stabilization is favored by short focal lengths.

The Note 10+ battery has a capacity of 4300 mAh. Samsung this time offered a 25W charger in the set and the option to buy a 45W charger. The smartphone can also be charged wirelessly with a power of 15W, as well as use the reverse charging function with a power of 9W. Charging with the supplied charger from zero to full takes 1 hour and 15 to 20 minutes. We didn't have Samsung's 45W charger to measure its charging time, but it certainly has to significantly reduce charging times - under one hour.

In the Geekbench 4 benchmark battery test, the Note 10+ discharged to zero after 11 hours and 16 minutes with a score of 6,760. The result reflects not only the battery capacity, but also the ratio of performance to energy efficiency of the processor.

In the YouTube streaming test with the screen brightness set to half, the Note 10+ was half discharged after 9 hours, which is expected to be 18 hours of continuous web video playback.

The results of the Note 10+ are at the forefront of smartphones, which, combined with high performance, a huge and extremely bright screen, and fast charging, allows you to evaluate the smartphone very positively. It is a pity that in the phone for nearly PLN 5,000, the manufacturer did not decide to include a faster 45W charger in the set. In the case of Huawei and Oppo, the chargers in the set charge smartphones at the maximum supported speed.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ is the most advanced, but also the most expensive smartphone in the manufacturer's portfolio, not counting the Galaxy Fold, which already exceeds all limits of common "price" sense. Note 10+ impresses with an uncompromising display, a refined overlay, a unique support for the stylus, a very good camera and good battery life. If we are looking for an exact equivalent, the Note competes only with itself. However, when we are just looking for a very good flagship, the situation gets complicated, because smartphones for half the price of Note today offer 90% of its functionality - AMOLED screen, triple camera, top performance and a capacious battery. Upon closer inspection, it turns out that the Note 10+ has a slightly better screen with narrower frames, is a bit more refined and takes slightly better photos. The problem is that you have to pay a little extra for it, so that it would be enough for a second phone.

That's why Note 10+ can be recommended either to stylus fans or people looking for the uncompromisingly best smartphone regardless of the price - they just can afford to buy Note 10+. When we start counting the price-performance ratio and equipment, it will quickly turn out that OnePlus 7 Pro and Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro are not as good as Note 10+, but they are also great and incomparably cheaper. However, it cannot be hidden that the Note 10+ has the aura of an uncompromising top-shelf device.

We love: the AMOLED screen with super narrow bezels

We don't like: the cosmic price
