Android 12 released in the final version. What's new?

Google has released the final version of Android 12, which is called the most significant update to the Android operating system. Here's what's new this system brings to its users.

Material You and a new way to design interface

By far the biggest change to Android 12 is Material You, the latest version of Google's design language. Material You, as described by the Mountain View giant, strives to create designs that are personal to every style, accessible to every need, vivid and adaptive to every screen. During the development of Android 12, Google created a new theme engine codenamed "coins" that generates a rich palette of pastel colors from the user's wallpaper. These colors are then applied to different parts of the system and their values are made available through an API that user applications can call. This allows applications to decide if they want to change the color of the user interface. For example, Google goes all out on Material You, and has already updated many of its own apps to include dynamic colors.

As "monet" isn't fully open source yet, we likely won't see other OEMs incorporating wallpaper-based themes in their Android 12 forks unless they decide to create their own implementation. In the meantime, developers of custom ROMs can implement this open source "coin" version. Third-party app developers can now add dynamic color support, even if it will only work on Pixel phones running the latest version of Android.

Material You doesn't end with dynamic colors. Android 12 also redesigned the notification panel UI, simplified the power menu, improved the lock screen layout, and made some other changes to the UI. Google has also modernized the Android widget and is encouraging developers to update their widgets to the new version. The company has already rolled out a number of updates that bring updated widget designs.

Scroll through screenshots

Android 12 is finally adding a very welcome feature that can be enjoyed by smartphone users from some manufacturers. It's about scrolling through screenshots. With this feature, you can take a screenshot of the scrolling page without having to take several screenshots and combine them into one image. Due to the way it was built, the native Android screenshot scrolling feature may not work in every application.

One-handed mode

Google introduced a feature to Android 12 called one-handed mode. This simple name hides a tool that allows you to lower the screen so that you can reach the top with one hand.

Game panel

Google has focused on games in the latest version of Android. The new game panel gives you quick access to useful tools such as the FPS meter and screen recorder that can be accessed in-game with a floating button. You can also change the device performance profile for each game, broadcast your gameplay live on YouTube, or check your performance on Play Games.

Privacy panel

A new page called the privacy panel lets you see how often applications request the most sensitive permissions. You can view a permission usage timeline such as location, camera, and microphone. This is also where you can quickly decide which applications have access to sensitive data.

Each time an application accesses the phone's camera or microphone, an indicator will be shown in the status bar. New switches allow you to cut off access to the camera and microphone so that no application can use them.

Chat widget

The new Conversations widget in Android 12 allows you to see the latest message or status update of the contact we chat with the most directly from your home screen.

Other news

Of course, the new features of Android 12 don't stop there. It includes, among other things, an improved auto-rotation system, the function of sharing URLs and images from the overview of recent applications, a new web panel, stretched scroll effects, application launch splash screens, clipboard reading notifications and much, much more.
