To rotate the screen in the Windows 10 or Windows 11 operating system, we can use system settings, hotkeys and in some cases a graphics card program. The Windows 10 and Windows 11 operating systems also have the ability to lock the screen in a given orientation.

How to rotate the screen - using the settings

To rotate the screen using the settings built into the Windows 7, 8, 10 or 11 operating system, right-click on a free space on the desktop and select the Display settings option. In Windows 7, the Control Panel will start. Windows 8, Windows 10, and Windows 11 will open Settings.

Alternatively, in Windows 7 we can go to Control Panel> Appearance and Personalization> Display. In Windows 8 and above, just launch Settings and go to System> Display.

In the Scale and Layout section, click on Display Orientation. Here we can choose the orientation of the image display. We have four options - Landscape (default), Portrait, Landscape (inverted) and Portrait (inverted). The window in the Windows 7 operating system has a slightly different appearance, but offers the same options.

How to rotate the screen - keyboard shortcuts

The Windows operating system also allows rotation using hotkeys. It is this method that most often causes the screen orientation to be accidentally rotated.

To rotate the screen, click Ctr + Alt + the selected arrow simultaneously. Note that this option is only active on selected computers. Some laptops also have the ability to change the orientation of the displayed content using one of the function keys.

How do I lock the screen orientation?

Some computers running the Windows 8 operating system and newer editions have a touch screen and a built-in accelerometer that automatically changes the screen orientation depending on the location of the laptop. This solution works in the same way as the screen orientation lock in Android and iPhone.

To block the automatic rotation of the screen, launch the Action Center. To do this, we can click the notification icon in the lower right corner or press the Windows + A keys at the same time. The relevant option will appear in the shortcuts.

If the computer has an accelerometer, the automatic screen rotation lock will also be found in Settings> System> Display.
