How to record a movie with music from a streaming service in the background on an iPhone

Music or movie copyrights make life more difficult for ordinary people than for pirates. Ever wonder why your iPhone mutes streaming music when you launch the camera? Exactly because of the copyright to the musical works. And it would be nice to have personally shot video clips with background music for your own use. Fortunately, there is a way to record the music played on iPhone while recording video.

IOS is ruthless. As soon as you try to record a video in the Camera app on your iPhone, the music from streaming services will stop playing. This is not due to iOS limitations, but to copyright protection for works. Such a protection is to make it difficult to make pirated recordings of music. Regardless of the service you use, the music that is playing will stop when you switch the Camera app to video mode. However, if you want your videos to have background music playing, there is a workaround to achieve this. The bad news is that the method described below won't work on all iPhone models.

To record videos with background music, you must use the QuickTake shooting mode. QuickTake first appeared in iOS 13 and allows you to record videos directly from the "Photos" mode. Additionally, this mode is available only for iPhone 11 series, iPhone SE 2nd gen, iPhone 12 series.

Remember: do not share movies with background music on the Internet and social media, because it's a simple way to trouble; sites like YouTobe and Instagram have music recognition tools and will at best remove material, but they can also block or delete your entire account.

Step 1 - Play the song

To start with, you need to start playing the song on your iPhone. Remember that the microphone will record the music flowing from the speakers, so you need to ensure the appropriate volume of the sound. And of course you can't use headphones at this point. However, you can easily use an external Bluetooth speaker. It doesn't matter what application you play the song. It could be Apple Music, Spotify, or any other music app or streaming service. It is important that the application supports background playback. An example of a popular application that does not do this is, for example, YouTube.

Step 2 - Record a video

To record a QuickTake video while playing music, launch the Camera app and go to Photo mode. Remember, if you try to switch to Video mode, the background song will stop playing and the whole trick will fail. Make sure you're in Photos mode, select a camera (it works with both rear and front cameras), then tap and hold the red shutter button to record a video. When you release the button, iPhone will finish filming.

If you want to record a longer video, you can lock QuickTake mode so it continues recording without having to hold down the shutter button. After tapping and holding the red button, slide it to the right without taking your finger off the screen, and it will lock. To stop recording while using this method, tap the shutter button again and it will show the standard stop icon.

While recording a video, the song that is playing will continue to play in the background from the built-in iPhone speakers and will be heard in the saved video. However, you have to remember that the audio will not sound perfect as it is being recorded from the iPhone speakers. Still, it's a great alternative to putting actual audio on video using a third-party app like Instagram, Snapchat, or TikTok.
